During the course of my last acupuncture treatment, one of the needles placed in my hand produced a lightning-bolt-like pain that shot through my wrist. My hand has been sore ever since- almost a week now. My acupuncturist apologized and said he must have hit a nerve. Is hitting nerves a normal thing in acupuncture? Should I be worried about myself or my doctor? My livelihood (massage) depends on my hands, so I'm kind of alarmed.

Re: Nerves (oooouch, part 2)
Fri, July 31, 2009 - 6:29 AMI am still wondering if anyone out there can answer this. I have not returned for an acupuncture treatment because I am not convinced it is safe. It is important for someone in my profession to know what to tell others about acupuncture and other alternative treatments, because I am often asked about them. -

Fri, July 31, 2009 - 8:49 AMYes, it sounds like your acupuncturist hit a nerve. . . it's not very common, but it does happen. It should heal, but yes, it can take time. :( I know.
